Online Retailer Data Breach Exposes 57 Million Customers’ Data

A massive data breach involving online apparel retailers Hot Topic, Torrid and BoxLunch has exposed personal data including names, physical and email addresses, dates of birth, and partial credit card numbers of 57 million customers. The data lists are being offered for sale on the Dark Web, and ransom demands have been given to Hot Topic to have these lists removed from the Dark Web listing.
The breach is believed to have occurred through malware that infected an employee’s personal device. This underscores the necessity of preventing data leaks between corporate networks by using NIAP certified peripheral sharing devices that would block inserting malicious code from an unclassified network into a network with sensitive information.
